Defense technologies are becoming increasingly relevant, and Lithuanian businesses, academia, and the military are actively seeking ways to collaboratively develop innovative solutions to strengthen national security. At the Tech-Park Kaunas startup community, 30 business companies, startups, and research teams presented a variety of technologies – from drones and anti-drone systems to cybersecurity, data transmission, soldier equipment, and psychological resilience solutions.
"Lithuanian businesses are already developing technologies that can be applied in defense. Our goal is to help them find suitable partners and understand the needs of the military so that innovations can become practical solutions," said Paulius Nezabitauskas, director of Tech-Park Kaunas.
Diversity of Technologies: Not Just Drones, But Also Cybersecurity and Psychological Resilience
The meeting showcased defense innovations covering a wide range of technologies. In addition to drones and anti-drone systems, particular attention was given to cybersecurity, soldier equipment solutions, and data protection.
"The demand for cybersecurity technologies has grown significantly. We encourage organizations to ensure the basics of cybersecurity protection. Systems are also needed to protect critical infrastructure from cyberattacks," said Deividas Stumbras, director of the Information Technology Department at the National Cybersecurity Centre under the Ministry of National Defence, who participated in the discussion.
The event also featured innovations aimed at strengthening the psychological resilience of soldiers, as well as functional food solutions to ensure optimal physical preparation for soldiers during long-term operations.
Business and Military Collaboration – Faster Solutions and Stronger Industry
Representatives from the Ministry of National Defence, the Defence Resources Agency, the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the Ministry of Economics and Innovation, and the Lithuanian Innovation Agency emphasized that local production allows for faster implementation of innovations and ensures timely technical support.
"Technologies and innovations are needed that are affordable but effective. Technology is developing rapidly, so it is important not to fall behind innovations and to make use of our business potential," highlighted Artur Plokšto, advisor to the Minister of National Defence.
International Partnerships Open Export Opportunities
Lithuania's innovation ecosystem is already joining international initiatives – Tech-Park Kaunas signed a cooperation agreement with the Nordic Defence Innovation Network "The Defence Innovation in The Nordics and New Nordics" (ODIN). This initiative aims to create a dual-use technology certification and testing mechanism and promote collaboration between the region's armed forces and technology developers.
Such initiatives help Lithuanian companies not only to create innovations for the local market but also to expand their products into international defense innovation chains, including NATO DIANA acceleration programs.
Kaunas – A Centre for Developing Defence Technologies
With its strong base in engineering, aviation, and IT sectors, Kaunas is becoming an increasingly important centre for dual-use innovations. The city's universities and growing startup community create excellent conditions for research and experimental development activities, which can be applied in both the civilian and defense sectors.
"To remain competitive in the field of defense innovations, it is essential to constantly test new technologies and adapt them to the military’s needs. Kaunas has the potential to become a centre of the defense innovation ecosystem not only in Lithuania but throughout the region," said Paulius Nezabitauskas.
