That last figure is worth dwelling on. In 2024, the same community paid 13.8M € in taxes. The jump to 48.5M € in a single year reflects not just growth in company count, but a meaningful shift in how these companies are operating.

The RENATURE Multiplier Event 2026 brought together experts from research, education, business and civil society to explore how nature-based solutions can strengthen climate resilience. The “unicorn” status has become a measure of success in the startup ecosystem and even a symbol of national pride. However, while public discourse focuses on startups that have reached billion-dollar valuations, the real processes behind building them often remain behind the scenes. Is it even possible to grow a “pure” Lithuanian unicorn in a small country, completely detached from the global world? From a business perspective, what is more valuable: a prestigious title or a quietly profitable company that consistently generates cash?

Every year, dozens of technological ideas are born in Kaunas. They are presented at hackathons, developed in universities, and built by small teams. However, only a small portion of them reach the market. The biggest challenge lies not in the idea itself, but in the most critical stage – when it needs to be turned into a real, functioning product.

“Startup” is a trendy term frequently heard in the public space, often associated with multimillion investments, high-profile success stories, and unicorns reaching billion-dollar valuations. This is encouraging and inspiring, but do startups create real value for a region and a country? What is their significance in a geopolitical context?

For several days, Kaunas became a meeting point for more than 150 innovators from the fields of healthcare, information technology, and artificial intelligence. But events like this are more than just an intense weekend — they are part of a broader, ongoing process. For several years now, Tech-Park Kaunas, together with its partners, has been consistently applying the hackathon format, complemented by technology acceleration programs. This model contributes to the creation of more than 20 new businesses each year.

After finishing 2025 in high gear, we took a brief breather in early January to reflect on what the year meant for Tech-Park Kaunas and our community. In short: it was intense, productive, and responsive to the tense geopolitical climate.

“Widely used remote work tools are excellent for video calls and messaging, but they do not solve the most important challenges of working at a distance: how to align within a remote team, how to maintain trust, how to manage tasks, make decisions, implement innovations, or take care of employee well-being,” notes Ramunė Guogienė, Project Expert at Tech-Park Kaunas.

On 2–4 December, partners from Poland, Serbia, Greece, Italy, Hungary and Lithuania met in Kaunas to explore the region’s fast-growing innovation scene. The visit, organised as part of the InnoCoop project, gave participants the chance to learn first-hand about local research and development (R&D) strengths and discover new ideas for cooperation.

The last month of the year in Kaunas began with an innovative spirit - the Kaunas Startup Awards 2025 took place on the evening of December 2. Nine of the most outstanding, profound, advanced, and promising startups were announced. The top prize, Startup of the Year, went to Fivrec, a company that brings rare metals back to life by extracting them from batteries.​

The winner of the Lithuanian defence technology hackathon Flaming Shield: Mission AI 2025 has entered negotiations for a €1 million investment to develop autonomous drone technologies. The investment, initiated by Coinvest Capital and private investors, will support solutions for unmanned systems designed to meet the needs of modern battlefields.

Vilnius, Lithuania. On September 29, 2025, the national workshop “New Horizons: Empowering Refugees through Entrepreneurship” brought together community leaders, international organisations, and Ukrainian refugee women entrepreneurs to celebrate resilience and new beginnings. Organised by Tech-Park Kaunas in cooperation with the Refugee Council of Lithuania, the IOM Lithuania and other national and international partners, the gathering highlighted how Ukrainian women have transformed challenges of displacement into opportunities for business creation and professional growth.

On September 29, 2025, join us at New Horizons: Empowering Refugees through Entrepreneurship – an evening to recognize achievements, share lessons, and spark new beginnings for refugees, especially women ready to continue their entrepreneurial journeys.

Tech-Park Kaunas, together with the Ekonomikos ir inovacijų ministerija and its partners, has signed a cooperation agreement to establish the Defence and Security Innovation Centre “Vytis”. The centre will be located in Kaunas and will serve as a strategic hub where business, academia, and government institutions can collaborate on their shared interests. It will focus on the development, testing, and certification of defence, security, and dual-use technologies and products.

From 10-12 October, technology enthusiasts and professionals are invited to join the intensive hackathon “Fire Shield: Mission AI 2025”, organised by the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union. Over three days, participants will tackle challenges directly linked to national security and contribute to the development of innovative solutions with the potential to shape the future of defence technologies.

Tech-Park Kaunas has taken a decisive step towards fostering inclusive, high-impact entrepreneurship by partnering with Kenyatta University Women Economic Empowerment (KU WEE) Hub under the “Strengthening African Digital Entrepreneurship Ecosystems” (SEADE) Twinning Program. The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding, unites two innovation ecosystems under a shared conviction: when women entrepreneurs succeed, they become powerful catalysts for economic transformation.

Kaunas-based medical technology startup “BrachyDOSE”, a proud member of the Tech-Park Kaunas innovation community, has raised 554,000 Eur in funding to further develop and test its radiation measurement technology in real hospital settings. The investment round was supported by venture capital funds “Coinvest Capital” and “BSV Ventures”, alongside business angel networks “LitBAN” and “EstBAN”.

In response to the ongoing evolution of the labour market, businesses across Europe are increasingly seeking innovative solutions to maintain productivity, collaboration, and team cohesion, regardless of whether colleagues are working from different cities or even countries. In this context, a consortium of innovation communities and universities from Scandinavia, the Baltic States, and Poland has introduced the “DistanceLAB hub”, a digital platform designed to support hybrid work models. An international team of partners from the Baltic Sea region, including experts from Tech-Park Kaunas, has developed the platform.

While entrepreneurship is, in theory, open to all, in practice women face greater challenges and responsibilities. They are often less visible and more likely to lack confidence in their abilities when starting a business. And if you are also a newcomer from a war-torn country, the obstacles multiply.

Last week’s “Coffee with Tech-Park Kaunas” networking event brought a fresh dose of insight and inspiration to the innovation ecosystem. The members of the Digital Rocket LT cluster joined the community for a thought-provoking morning of networking and knowledge-sharing.

Try, test and learn from those who are already winning in international startup arenas - this is the message the Tech-Park Kaunas community, business mentors and well-known startup entrepreneurs conveyed to the participants of the Tech_Champ hackathon.

Defense technologies are becoming increasingly relevant, and Lithuanian businesses, academia, and the military are actively seeking ways to collaboratively develop innovative solutions to strengthen national security. At the Tech-Park Kaunas startup community, 30 business companies, startups, and research teams presented a variety of technologies – from drones and anti-drone systems to cybersecurity, data transmission, soldier equipment, and psychological resilience solutions.

Tech-Park Kaunas as a part of the Interreg BSR Circular Spaces team provides digital tools and materials to support makerspaces, startups, SMEs, and other stakeholders in the transition towards more sustainable and circular practices. These resources offer structured guidance, practical insights, and networking opportunities to help organizations integrate circular economy principles effectively.

Tech-Park Kaunas, in collaboration with international partners, has become a member of the newly established the Organisation for Defence Innovation in the Nordics (ODIN). On 26 February, an official Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Riihimäki, Finland.

Ukrainian women highlight the need for empathetic integration and discover the challenges they face in establishing businesses in their new home country. How can children’s integration into a new socio-cultural environment be improved? How can language learning be facilitated or can ethnic heritage be introduced through gastronomic experiences? These are some examples of the business solutions developed by the winners of the “BSI_4Women" business development and incubation program, implemented by Tech-Park Kaunas. The program lasted four months and was designed for Ukrainian women who fled to Lithuania due to the war. 

Tech-Park Kaunas, one of the largest startup communities, will host a "Demo Day" this Friday. The event is the finale of the Interreg Baltic Sea Region BSI_4Women Business Development and Incubation Program. Ukrainian women who have participated in the business development program will present their ideas and solutions to an audience of business experts and community members.

The European Innovation Council (EIC) Business Acceleration Services has officially launched an open call powered by the EIC ACCESS+ initiative. The call offers up to 60 000 Eur in grants, covering up to 50% of the costs, to access specialised services from the EIC Service Catalogue for deep-tech startups and SMEs that have received EIC Awards or the prestigious Seal of Excellence under the Horizon Europe program. Companies can use the funds to access vital resources to accelerate their growth and scale their innovations. 

Over the weekend, the hackathon “The Flaming Shield 2024," organized by the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union and Tech-Park Kaunas, highlighted the growing trend of dual-purpose innovation. More than 200 participants gathered to develop technological innovations in cybersecurity and defense, with support from representatives of NATO's DIANA accelerator. Innovation experts emphasize that dual-use technologies are becoming a niche where small countries can take the lead in the tech sector.

The cyber defence and security innovation hackathon "Fire Shield 2024," initiated by the Lithuanian Rifle Association, will take place in Kaunas on October 4-6. Kaunas Science and Technology Park Tech-Park Kaunas and three investment funds joined forces in organising the hackathon.

As the world embraces the principles of the circular economy, the "Circular spaces" consortium is taking a significant step forward with the release of a new guide designed to transform makerspaces into circular innovation hubs. The guide “Transformation into Circular Makerspaces: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide for Makerspaces,” aims to assist makerspaces across the region in adopting circular economy practices, aligning with regional ambitions for sustainability and economic resilience.

Lithuania has recently been rapidly establishing itself as one of the leading countries in biotechnology. According to data released this year by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), the country ranks third in the world regarding total investment intensity in research and development. Innovation development experts see a lot of potential for medtech startups in Kaunas, especially those that choose to grow in preacceleration programs.

This weekend, in Kaunas, at Tech-Park Kaunas, an exclusive event took place - Startup Preschool Kaunas training, a format developed in Berlin and adaptable to different European cities. The 3-day intensive entrepreneurial course gave 15 young creators and startup enthusiasts the opportunity to deepen their entrepreneurial knowledge and improve their business planning skills.

"Startup Preschool” courses organised in cities in different countries are coming to Kaunas from 11-13 April. The course is organised by Startup Migrants in collaboration with the international deep tech community atTRACTION.

On 19-21 April, Kaunas Santaka Valley will host one of the largest hackathons in Lithuania, Tech_Champ. Medical and information technology developers will compete not only for prizes established by major Lithuanian companies but also for the opportunity to grow a startup and attract investments from Lithuanian and foreign investors in pre-acceleration programs. The medical technology sector in Lithuania is experiencing rapid growth and gaining recognition beyond the Northern European region. For the industry, it is not just another hype. Artificial intelligence (AI) essentially revolutionises and upgrades manufacturing sectors. The Ukrainian diaspora that has come to Lithuania as a result of the war in Ukraine, is slowly finding ways to adapt to the new country, but only a very small number of them decide to start their own business. Data from the Lithuanian Public Employment Service show that only 4% of more than 81 000 Ukrainians who arrived in Lithuania, are self-employed in their home country.

After the cyber defence and security innovation hackathon "Ugninis skydas 2023", organised by the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union and the investment fund “ScaleWolf”, the winners showed impressive results in Kaunas. They already have plans for the most promising technologies. Experts say that the novelties can be used to strengthen the country's defence.

On 20-22 October, Tech-Park Kaunas will host the largest Baltic cyber defense and security innovation hackathon "Ugninis skydas 2023". The three-day event is organized by Šaulių sąjunga, the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union (LRU), in cooperation with ScaleWolf, an international investment fund investing in companies developing innovations in the field of defense and security, and Tech-Park Kaunas.

Tech-Park Kaunas, one of the largest innovation communities in the country with more than 100 members, has engaged 39 of the country's largest companies in a programme of collaboration with startups in 2022.

According to the McKinsey Global Survey on AI (2022), the proportion of organisations using AI has plateaued between 50 and 60 percent for the past few years, impacting the increasing number of AI specialists that companies need to train or recruit.

On 17 January, Tech-Park Kaunas hosted a meeting of the members of the ICT cluster Digital Rocket LT, open to all members of the Park. More than twenty entrepreneurs presented their businesses and learned about this year's calls for business development and partnerships.

Good deeds change the world! The team of Kaunas Science and Technology Park continues the tradition and on the 7th of November invited the whole innovation community to experience the Sweet Challenge. Startup teams and the Park administration exchanged sweets for donations to the Lithuanian Red Cross initiatives. Solar parks serve as shelters for sheep and a source of sustainable energy for people and businesses. Kaunas Science and Technology Park and Vilnius based company "Saulės Grąža" is expanding its network of solar power plants in the Lithuanian regions. 

In 2021, the Lithuanian startup ecosystem saw a significant increase in investment and a several-fold growth in sales, exports and exits, but despite this, a large number of innovative businesses faced considerable challenges. Startups still cite lack of financial resources as the main and most common reason for their difficulties.

How about parks not only on the ground, but also in the sky? The trend of green roofs and planted facades, as it is often called, is slowly making its way to Lithuania. According to investment funds, venture capital investment volume has broken records, with Lithuanian startups raising around 10 times more capital in 2021 than during the first year of the pandemic. The second year of the Pandemic not only brought increased VC investment volumes to the startup community but also highlighted the need for safe, consumer-driven digital innovation. How did the participants of the Kaunas Science and Technology Park's business pre-acceleration program Evolut 4.0 evaluate such changes?

Pandemic reality has shaken even the biggest players in the business, but for some it has been a valuable boost, while for others it has backed them into a corner. This autumn's final conference of the international accelerator programme Fast Forward Europe, held in Poland, "How to accelerate regional economies?" also invited Lithuanian representatives. On the 8 of December, DELFI broadcasted the annual Kaunas Startups Awards organised by Kaunas Science and Technology Park. During the broadcast, five winners were announced, whose technologies were selected as the best solutions of the year in the categories Health Technology of the Year, Robotics Solution of the Year, Breakthrough of the Year, Environmentally Friendly Solution and Technology of the Year.

Scientists from medical startup RamaZottius Lab and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have developed a solution to fight this disease. The team, which took part in the Kaunas STP business pre-acceleration programme EVOLUT 4.0, has developed PerioZIP gel, which consists of a polymer composite with a bioactive material for the conservative treatment and management of periodontitis.

Open to new opportunities! Seven startups based in Kaunas, Vilnius and Tallinn, Estonia, completed their pre-acceleration program this Tuesday. The program, which started in September, allowed the teams to learn about the essential stages of developing innovative products/solutions and to deepen their knowledge of pre-acceleration.

A team from Kaunas has developed a self-balancing personal mobility robot and named it "Kim-e". The powerchair by Chronus Robotics can not only replace a wheelchair, but can also significantly expand the limits of mobility options.

Robotics is transforming the metal industry, but the latest technologies are usually limited to larger companies - small ones find the initial investment too high. The Handybot team, which is breaking new ground in Kaunas Science and Technology Park's innovation community, has developed a CNC workstation automation system, a robotic platform that facilitates and optimizes the work processes of small metalworking companies.

The increase in e-commerce volumes during the pandemic period and the increase in parcel traffic have led many companies to consider pick-up terminal solutions. Singleton, Kaunas STP located company that cooperates with Scandinavian IoT companies, has developed an easy-to-use solution that does not require a large initial investment and is suitable for both large and small businesses.  

The amount of information in the world is growing exponentially, and data storage technologies are evolving along with it. While the first hard drive could hold just 5 MB of information - roughly one poor-quality photo - today we can store almost 26,000 times more data on our phones. Mantas Simutis, the co-founder of Genomika, a biotech startup based in Kaunas Science and Technology Park, says that while data storage technologies are improving, the principle of storing data has not changed. That's why he and his team have started to develop a much more promising way of storing information in nature's long-established repository - DNA.

MedDream medical software, which provides universal access to medical data, combined with new MedCAD technology, helps to detect diseases faster by analyzing medical images. Softneta, a medical technology company based in the innovation community of Kaunas Science and Technology Park, knows how to use artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithms to speed up the analysis of medical data and ease the workload of medical professionals.

The New Reality has presented many challenges, even more so when adapting and discovering new working patterns. For example, hybrid working may lead to  arrhythmia in social relations, bias in decision-making "by sight" and "by heart", which disbalances teams. Such changes were observed by corporate team builders, technology developers and internal communication experts who met at the event "The Pandemic Reality. How to organise team work?"

At the end of last week, the international health-tech ATHIKA conference "Would you let a robot be your doctor?" took place in Kaunas Science and Technology Park. During the conference the health industry leaders shared their insights on what innovation will revolutionise medicine in the near future.

Technology developers note that the accelerated digitalisation brought about by the Pandemic has highlighted cybersecurity gaps, making fintech security solutions one of the most receptive areas for innovation. "Idenfy", a startup based in Kaunas Science and Technology Park that develops digital tools for identity authentication, has scaled in foreign markets and found new customers in Europe, the US, Asia and Australia.

“Many CNC machine workshops are embracing machining robotics as a tool to promote increased machining efficiency and boost their machine shops' competitiveness as a result of improvements in robotics and robotic technologies”, says Linas Steponavičius, Kaunas STP innovation community member, the head of HANDYBOT.  He developed a robotic hand/a model that allows smaller machine shops to automate CNC manufacturing.

More than 20 e-rooms and 5+ hours of business talks! Kaunas STP and international partners – Tallinn Science Park Tehnopol and Turku Science Park invited 22 startups to business coaching sessions at the International Business Coaching Day 2021. The sessions were designed for incubated startups and pre-acceleration programes’ attendees developing innovative technologies and social entrepreneurs.

Welcome to the autumn session! Kaunas STP business pre-acceleration program EVOLUT 4.0 has brought together startup teams seeking to successfully attract the first investments. It all started with an inspiring story by Turing College founder Lukas Kaminskis and the startup’s experience in the Y Combinator accelerator in the USA.

The Pandemic, which lasted for almost two years, also revealed the weaknesses of the medical industry. Long queues of patients in Lithuanian hospitals have been discussed in public before, and after the healthcare system faced a crisis. It became even more obvious that the digital transformation of healthcare and making the services more available at home is a necessity.

More than 60 members of the teams of companies based in Kaunas Science and Technology Park joined the innovation community Piknic and kart racing. The adrenaline-filled event in Elektrėnai invited startups to meet new members of the Park. 

The vision and technologies of a smart city were presented at the conference "SMARTIES: Technologies that Change the City". The organizers of the event invited communities from all over Lithuania to load new knowledge about the creation of a smart city into Kaunas STP.

It is time to strengthen digital skills training in VET institutions and deepen knowledge of digital technologies: the application of artificial intelligence, 3D scanning, augmented reality and blockchain technology. Kaunas Science and Technology Park located startup Brachy DOSE has started to develop a medtechsolution - a brachytherapy dosimeter, which helps to register the exposure doses of cancer patients during radiation therapy. This will have a major impact on the better quality of life of patients after completing a course of radiation therapy in the future.

Kaunas STP innovation community members the genetic research company Genomika is using biological knowledge to create the most advanced data repository. The DNA sequence was encoded for the first time in the world with the national anthem - the National Anthem of Lithuania. The tube with the recorded National Anthem in DNA will be displayed at the Centre for Civil Education.

In the search for climate resilience, some of the most promising answers may already exist in nature. This idea shaped the RENATURE Multiplier Event 2026, where representatives from research, education, business, policy and civil society gathered to discuss nature-based solutions, green skills and sustainable communities.

The event invited participants to look at nature not only as something to be protected, but also as a living model for innovation – one that can inspire how cities adapt, how materials are designed, how people learn and how communities prepare for climate challenges.

Opening the event, Paulius Nezabitauskas, Director of Tech-Park Kaunas, welcomed participants and underlined the importance of reconnecting with nature as a source of knowledge and resilience. 

“Nature is not only something we must protect – it is also one of our greatest teachers. By learning from natural systems and contributing to their preservation, we can build more resilient communities and more responsible innovation ecosystems,” said P. Nezabitauskas.

Climate Resilience Through Nature-based Solutions

The event opened with a presentation by P. Ciccioli from the National Research Council of Italy, who introduced the RENATURE project and its role in building climate resilience through nature-based solutions. The presentation highlighted that green spaces, biodiversity and natural ecosystems can become part of the infrastructure that helps communities respond to heat, flooding and other climate-related risks.

European Practices and sustainable Technologies

M. Luzetti from the University for Foreigners of Perugia presented a comparative overview of nature-based solutions in Europe, focusing on key findings, challenges and best practices. The presentation showed that successful green transition depends not only on innovative ideas, but also on local engagement, policy support and the ability to adapt good practices to real community needs.

A presentation by Prof. Dr. Visvaldas Varžinskas, Head of the Research Center for Advanced Packaging Materials and Technologies at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), focused on bio-based and biodegradable polymer composites made from locally sourced agro-waste. His presentation connected climate resilience with everyday products, showing how circular economy principles can help reduce dependence on fossil-based materials and give new value to resources that would otherwise be discarded.

“Agro-waste can become a valuable resource when science, design and industry work together. Bio-based packaging materials show how circular thinking can reduce environmental impact while creating practical solutions for business,” explained Prof. Dr. V. Varžinskas.

Prof. Dr. Erika Adomavičiūtė from KTU discussed advanced electrospun materials and the role of nanotechnology in sustainability. Her presentation explored how high-tech materials can contribute to greener solutions by enabling more efficient, lighter and more functional products, while also raising the question of how advanced technologies can be designed and applied responsibly.

Outdoor Learning and Green Skills

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Inga Gurauskienė from KTU presented enabling outdoor work and study ecosystems for sustainable personal, professional and planetary wellbeing. Her presentation added a human dimension to the event, emphasizing that people’s connection to nature shapes not only how they learn and work, but also how they understand environmental responsibility.

“Spending more time in nature does not have to be complicated - it can start with studying, working or holding a meeting outside. These everyday practices can improve wellbeing, support creativity and help people build a closer connection with the environment,” noted Assoc. Prof. Dr. I. Gurauskienė.

The event concluded with an open discussion and networking lunch, encouraging participants to explore practical ways to apply nature-based solutions in education, research, business and community development. The shared message of the day was clear: building climate resilience requires both technological progress and a renewed ability to learn from nature.

The event was organised as part of the RENATURE project, co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ KA2 Strategic Partnership for VET. The project aims to strengthen the education sector’s capacity to apply nature-based solutions in climate change mitigation and adaptation through innovative learning programmes, open digital resources and practical tools for educators, students and institutions across Europe.
